Week Four
It was quite interesting to try a slightly different style in my previous ‘Food’ shoot, and I wanted to take this a little further by stepping away from what I usually like to photograph. I felt this might inspire my project further.
Eric Kim is a photographer who often captures the everyday in an unusual way; making his objects look other-wordly and almost unrecognisable at first glance. Therefore, for this shoot I wanted to try a similar technique. Like Kim, I worked with close-ups and often deliberately shot the images out of focus or overexposed them to give them this transcendental appearance. I think the images that work best are in fact the ones that are most difficult to distinguish.
Kim works in black and white, so I chose to also make these images black and white and in some areas I increased the contrast. I wanted to see if this would have any further effect on the transcendental nature of the images – and overall I think it works well. The lack of colour makes it much harder to tell what each image is and adds to the mysterious feeling the images create.
Although I’m pleased with a lot of the images in this shoot, the problem is that they don’t particularly go well with my other work so far. Therefore, I think I would like to continue with my usual style, moving forward. I love the idea however, that these images further demonstrate the power photography has to turn the everyday into something far more interesting, and as well, the ability we all have to interpret the every day as something far more beautiful if we simply take the time to look.
