Week Nine
Last week I was struggling a bit for inspiration. Since then, I’ve really been trying to think about what is important to me in making the everyday look interesting. My conclusion; LIGHT! After looking at a few more photographers and referring back to my previous visual research, I found this was one thing they all had in common that drew me to their work the most.
Light is a great way to make something ordinary appear beautiful. It brings a lot of atmosphere to the image. I shot mainly just before sunset/during golden hour for this shoot as I wanted to make the most of the warm light and cast shadows.
I found a lot of interesting light patterns on the floor for this shoot – however I’m not such a fan of these images. I find the photos with actual objects in them have much more substance and meaning. The carpet photos also get a bit repetetive throughout the shoot.
I also looked a little bit at some food – as this has been a subject matter used by all three of the photographers I’ve looked at so far. Again, I don’t think these ones worked so well – they have more of a staged feeling to me, which is not what I’m aiming for in this project. Perhaps I could have been more carefree in the way I framed them. It might be an idea to adopt a fast point and shoot technique for some of my next shoots, just to see if this gives the photos a more ‘accidental’ and ordinary, everyday feel.
I’m happy with the colour scheme that seems to flow quite nicely throughout the shoot. I would like to continue with a similar colour scheme. I think the neutral colours once again bring that sense of the everyday, whilst not being too dull or too dramatic.
Overall, there are only a few photos from this shoot which I really like. But I definitely feel more confident in my ideas. I would like to try something a bit different for my next shoot to develop the work further, however I will definitely continue to consider the lighting in my photographs. Perhaps I could take this idea of light even further and really focus on the time of day or the way in which I capture the light. I think there’s a lot that can be done with light and shadows.
