Flashgun

Week Seven

I expressed to Simon in last week’s tutorial that I’m struggling a little for inspiration at this point in my project. He suggested I try using flash, just to see if this would have any interesting outcome. I borrowed the Nikon SB-800 Speedlight from the Hub and tried this out.

Although it was fun to try something new, I’m not such a fan of this shoot. I think what I enjoy most about photography is trying to capture nice lighting and shadows, and using a flash sort of takes away a lot of my ability to control those things. Overall, I’m not a fan of these photos. It’s also an issue that they don’t really go with any of my other work, (like the ‘Transcendent’ shoot) so I don’t think I would want to include any of this style in my final book.

I do quite like the last few images of the flowers, however. I think the flash really accentuates the textures and details in the withering leaves. This creates a similar type of melancholy, emotive atmosphere that I’ve been achieving so far in my work. Perhaps I should have tried more close-ups of textured objects.

I think I will continue without flash for my next shoot as this turned out to be something I’m not really interested in, although I’m glad I tried something a bit different for a change.
