Eric Kim

Eric Kim is yet another photographer who enjoys revealing beauty in the mundane. However, his photographs are a little different in style compared to the work I have looked at so far. I thought it would be good for my project to try out something a bit different and see if this takes me in a new direction. I will definitely consider taking more photos that are out of focus and close-up as I think this adds another element of beauty to a lot of Kim’s photographs.

Although I usually like black and white images (and they definitely work well in this series by Eric Kim) I don’t think this is something I will necessarily apply to all of my work, as I’m quite liking the atmosphere that the colours in my photos are creating at the moment. However, I will certainly give black and white a go in my next shoot.

I think the photos that work best for me from this collection, are the ones that are really obscure and difficult to identify. It’s very interesting to me that these are all everyday objects that we all see all the time, yet the way they have been photographed makes them almost impossible to distinguish. This shows that just because something is ordinary, it doesn’t have to be viewed in that way. Everything can be photographed and interpreted in a million different ways and for me, that’s the beauty of photography.

I really like the high contrast in these images too. It brings an element of drama to the image, which again contradicts the idea that the everyday is boring. Kim’s photographs have definitely inspired me to look at the everyday in an even more unusual and abstract way.
