Continued Diary Entries: Lockdown Week 2 (30th March – 5th April 2020)

Monday 30th March – LOCKDOWN DAY 8: I watched a really encouraging video on Facebook today, about how we might rise from this as a better human race. Despite its drawbacks, social media has been a huge comfort in all of this. A way to check on people, stay connected, encourage each other and try to have a laugh in an otherwise terrifying situation.

Tuesday 31st March – LOCKDOWN DAY 9: It’s my Aunt’s birthday today. It’s horrible that she has to spend it alone in quarantine, but I think she is ok. Usually, we would go out to celebrate. We did a family FaceTime call this evening, which was really nice. I think it made us all feel much better just to talk. It’s funny, the things we took for granted before all of this. Perhaps, we might learn to be more appreciative when life returns to normal.

Wednesday 1st April – LOCKDOWN DAY 10: Today, I looked at some of the statistics for the virus. Authorities have now reported that there have been almost 922,000 cases of COVID-19, globally. The death-toll worldwide has now reached 44,252, although roughly 193,000 people have recovered from the virus. A few old friends reached out to me today to ask how I am. Despite everything, there has been an overwhelming sense of people coming together and helping each other through all of this.

Thursday 2nd April – LOCKDOWN DAY 11: Today we clapped for the NHS again. I love this new tradition and now look forward to every Thursday evening. It provides a light relief and a sense of community after a week of quarantine.

Friday 3rd April – LOCKDOWN DAY 12: This evening, my remaining housemates and I FaceTimed our other housemates who have gone home. It’s the little things like this that are keeping us all going.

Saturday 4th April – LOCKDOWN DAY 13: Today, I hurt my back and I’m unable to move much. It’s getting me down a lot that my already limited space has become even more restricted. I’ll likely be unable to exercise or go on daily runs for a while, which was really helping me to stay positive through this.

Sunday 5th April – LOCKDOWN DAY 14: The Prime Minister has been admitted to hospital. The Queen made a speech on TV this morning to thank everyone for their efforts during this time. She likened it to an announcement she made during World War II; ‘It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away from their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do. While we have faced challenges before, this one is different. This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed – and that success will belong to every one of us.’
