Stephen Shore – ‘A Road Trip Journal’

At the beginning of this project, I had a look at some of Stephen Shore’s work. As I continue thinking about how my work will be presented, I want to keep looking at book ideas. I want to look a bit more at Shore’s project, ‘A Road Trip Journal’, as I think my photos could work well presented in a journal format.

‘A Road Trip Journal’ is a photo diary of Shore’s trip across America in the 1970’s. Similarly to Soth’s ‘Sleeping by the Mississippi’, he records his journey through America. However unlike Soth, Shore’s book is more in the style of a diary rather than the usual photo-book. The pages feature maps, tickets, brochures and scribbled writing – as if in the style of a scrapbook kept along the journey. I think this gives it a far more personal feel. It makes the book really look like a document of an adventure.

Perhaps it would be interesting to include some writing in my own book. I could write about what I did that day as if it were a diary. It might be interesting to have an exciting diary entry alongside an image of something ordinary – showing that just because I’m surrounded by everyday things, it doesn’t mean the day hasn’t been memorable; but instead of photographing the party, or day trip, or holiday I’ve been on that day, I will photograph the things that get forgotten.
