Printing for Group Reviews

Today, I printed three groups of photos, sized 5×8 on the Epson printer, ready for group tutorials next week. As per my last blog post, I decided on three different categories to sort my photos into. I chose to group these particular photos because they look good together – they share similar subjects, colour schemes or quality of light. As I start to think about the potential of making my work into a book, I want to begin thinking about how my photos look when put together. I think I’ve developed a very distinct style throughout most of this project so far. It will be interesting to see what other people think of the photos in the group tutorials next week.

EPHEMERAL

The idea of ‘ephemeral’ is that the photos are something temporary/a passing moment. The light captured in the images will soon pass and change. I think these photos all work quite well together, although I’m not sure about the chair (bottom left), as it’s quite high in contrast and a lot darker than the other images. The rest of the photos follow a distinct colour scheme and similar objects.

TRANSCENDENTAL

These photos are all from my ‘Transcendent’ shoot, heavily inspired by Eric Kim. The idea is that it’s not immediately obvious what you are looking at. I think these photos easily work well together because they are black and white – however I think this sets them apart from all of my other work and I’m unsure if they would work well alongside the other photos in a book. I really like them as a separate piece of work though, it will be interesting to see what the others take from these images.

DIARISTIC

For diaristic, I wanted to use photographs that were each taken on separate days, as if showing a visual diary of what I had done each day. As I discussed before, this could be an interesting approach to take when making my book. I think the colour scheme of these photos works really well together, however there are a couple of photos here which I’m unsure about. The curtain photo is a little too contrasted for my liking and the unusual perspective on the other two bottom photos is bothering me.

I also printed this photo (below) sized to A2 on plain paper. This photo is from my ‘Transcendent’ shoot from week four. I wasn’t sure if this shoot held any significance in my project, but Simon suggested I print one of the images large to see if this had any impact on the way it would be interpreted. The point of the shoot was to make the viewer really think about what they might be looking at, it would be interesting to see if this is made any easier or more difficult when the size is blown up.
