Considering Final Outcome/Telling a story through my work…

Although I have a while to go with this project, I think it would be sensible to start thinking about how I want my work to be presented at the end, so that I can begin reflecting this in my photographs. I’d love to make some kind of book about this work. This is our final uni project and book making is something I’ve not really tried in the past, so I think it would be great to push myself a little further! I also feel I’ve developed a very strong visual style throughout this project so far. There are a lot of images that work well together in terms of colour, lighting and style – so I think they would work really well together in a sequence. I’m considering a photo album style of book, as my photos are about noticing the everyday things that make us who we are. Photo albums do this too, they feature our childhood photos, family pictures, snippets of our houses from decades ago… I want my photos (although ordinary things) to create that same nostalgic feelings you get from looking through a family photo album.

I think it would be beneficial to start looking at examples of books or photographers that sequence their images well. One photographer that springs to mind immediately is Alec Soth. I like his photographs but I would say I’m more of a fan of his books as a whole! He has a very clever way of sequencing images in a way that tells a story and his use of repetitive imagery is fantastic. I think my next step will be to look at some of his work and start thinking about how I could sequence some of the work I’ve done so far.
