As I’m now roughly a third of the way through my project, I thought it would be useful to stop and reflect a little on how it’s going and where I want to go next. I’m really enjoying taking my photography back to what I enjoy most. It’s been a while since I’ve really focused on developing my own visual style and I think this project is a great opportunity to do that more. I’ve taken a few photos that I really like so far, and can already envision them as part of my final presentation of work. I’m also already starting to think about the possibility of turning the photos into a book.
I would say there have been some challenges throughout this project so far. I had a lot of trouble feeling inspired and getting started to begin with. I think I’ve done some valuable artist research, looking at a lot of photographers that have been firm favourites of mine for years (like Nigel Shafran, Stephen Shore, William Eggleston). This has been very helpful in terms of inspiration but I think it was important to push myself a little out of my comfort zone and also try something new, in the style of Eric Kim.
My next steps will be to really start thinking about what I want my work to communicate to the viewer. I think it’s important to make myself clear in my intentions. I also want to think a bit more about how I will present my work. I’ve never really worked with books much before, so I would like to give this a try for this final project. I’m thinking that Alec Soth would be a useful photographer to look into, as I really enjoy his books. There’s something about the way he selects and orders his photographs that make his books really interesting and allow him to successfully tell a story through his images. I also want to look at more photographers who work in a similar style to my own.
So far I’m happy with the project overall, but I want to make sure I continue to feel inspired and take lots more pictures. I will keep reflecting back on my work as I go.
