In my first tutorial with Simon we discussed my initial thoughts about my project and how I might begin. At this point I’m still a bit unsure about where to start. Simon gave me some useful reading material relevant to my project and some things to consider photographing:
Theoretical discourses to look into:
- Michel de Certeau (A philosipher of everyday life) – The Practice of Everyday Life, Walking in the City
- The epic and the everyday contemporary and photographic art
- Psychogeography – intuitive response to one’s surroundings, emotional impact our environment has on us, wandering and responding to what’s around you.
- Situationists of 1950s – Guy Debord & the ‘derive’ – the drifter
Starting points to consider:
- What I do daily – Eating, socialising, food shopping, gym, mundane activities like brushing teeth etc.
- Who we are as people today – shown through our everyday habits & routines (both ordinary & strange, yet familiar?)
- Explore places I go often
- Take photos of the things around me in my everyday environment
