In this article, Nicholas Huggins discusses the work of William Eggleston. Initially, Eggleston was widely criticised for his work. It was unusual at the time, for photographers to shoot in colour and his subject matters where considered too ‘mundane’ to make successful photographs. However, soon many began to consider him as the pioneer of colour photography and his work eventually gained great recognition and praise.
Huggins explains that, in the beginning of his career, Eggleston felt uninspired by his ‘boring’ surroundings. Admitting to his friends that he didn’t know what to photograph in such an ‘ugly’ town, he was advised to just ‘photograph the ugly stuff.’ Despite these mundane subject matters, Eggleston’s photos are beautifully colourful and interesting to look at.
As Huggins puts it in this article, ‘Artists see the world through different eyes to most people; they see the beauty in things that may be considered boring or mundane, and there are no photographers who capture this beauty as well as William Eggleston.’ I want to try and achieve a similar thing in my own project and expose beauty in things that people might usually overlook.
I’ve always liked Eggleston’s work, it’s very much the style that I am drawn to. After looking at this article, I think it would be beneficial to my project to have a closer look at some of his work and consider exactly what it is that makes it so interesting.
