2018 Project: Grandad’s Shed

Week One

‘Grandad’s Shed’ was one of my favourite projects to shoot and I was really pleased with the outcome. I chose around 6 photographs to display for the final presentation of work. I’ve displayed three of my favourites in large format below.

I enjoyed this project because it had a great personal and nostalgic meaning to me, as a place where I spent much of my childhood playing and helping my Grandad in the garden. The images spark many memories of both the place and the person I associate them with. I stuck with the theme of natural, muted colours with warm light because I wanted the viewer to feel a similar sense of comfort when looking at the photos.

I would love to go back to my Grandparents house and shoot there later on in this project. There are some other spaces (like the kitchen where I have lots of memories of my Nan, and the cellar which is full of interesting objects and memories) which I would love to photograph.

I also want to stick to a similar visual style to this; focusing on colour, lighting and a combination of long shots and closeups. Perhaps this project can be a continuation of Grandad’s Shed. It would be nice to make a series of all the spaces that hold meaning to me.
